Ontario Estate Law Update + Primer
The estate planning and administration process is becoming more complex in Ontario due to a number of key drivers and trends. These include: the increased value of estates in Ontario, managing complex, multi-generational and multi-jurisdictional estates, evolving regulation and increased disputes surrounding estates. It also includes ongoing changes to Succession Law Reform Act (SLRA) and the Accelerating Access to Justice Act which also have significant implications for estates in the province.
To help bring these drivers and trends to life, our presenter(s) will review examples of some high profile estate matters in Ontario in recent years. How these specific matters reflect the drivers and trends noted above. And what changes to recent legislative and policy changes are most relevant to estates professionals in their practices.

Tuesday, November 8th - Day 2 (12pm - 2.30pm ET)
The evolving family: addressing challenges in the estate administration process
The increasing complexity of estates is reflective of how society is evolving as well. Families who are the beneficiaries of estates are often blended, multi-jurisdictional and multi-generational. This creates different drivers, requirements and expectations from stakeholders during the estate administration process. This includes compelling life events like contemplation of prenuptial agreements for blended families, more complex trust arrangements and powers of attorney which affect relationship dynamics.
Adding to the mix, as digitization across society and business accelerates, so do expectations for a digitized estate administration experience. However, for end users – coordination, planning and execution during the estate administration process is often seen as opaque, slow and traditionally analogue.
In this session, our speakers will review the impact of the evolving complexity of families on the estate administration process and how emerging digital and financial platforms are helping to simplify the estate administration process.
Themes covered will include:
How are evolving family structures impacting the estate administration process? And what are the key drivers and trends surrounding this (i.e. prenuptial arrangements, complex trust and power of attorney)?
How are disputes concerning estates evolving and what are the key trends surrounding them?
Innovation and the estate administration process. How are emerging digital platforms and financial solutions helping to smooth what is a slow and opaque process for beneficiaries?
